

Lance H. Bassage, II, VMD, DACVS joined Rhinebeck Equine, LLP when the hospital opened in 2002, and is now chief of surgery. He received a B.A. in Biology from Gettysburg College, Gettysburg, PA in 1984. He received his V.M.D. in 1993 from the University of Pennsylvania’s School of Veterinary Medicine, where he graduated first in his class, with honors – Summa Cum Laude.
Dr. Bassage completed a 1-year surgical internship (Junior Surgery Clinician, 1993-1994), followed by a 3-year residency in large animal surgery at the University of Pennsylvania’s New Bolton Center (1994-1997). He is board-certified in large animal surgery. He began his professional career in 1997 as an assistant professor of large animal surgery at Tufts University’s School of Veterinary Medicine. In 2001 he spent a year as an assistant professor of equine surgery at the College of Veterinary Medicine, University of Illinois. In 2002 he opted to leave academia for the challenges of private practice and accepted the position with Rhinebeck Equine, LLP.
In addition to numerous honors and awards, Dr. Bassage has published a variety of scientific articles in professional journals as well as authored chapters in textbooks on equine lameness and equine surgery. He is a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Surgeons. He also has numerous professional affiliations and membership in the following: the American Association of Equine Practitioners, the Veterinary Orthopedic Society, AO-VET (an academically-oriented international veterinary orthopedic orga-
nization), and the American Veterinary Medical Association. Dr. Bassage is now serving his 3rd consecutive 3-year term as a member of the editorial review board of Veterinary Surgery (the premier international journal for this specialty).
Dr. Bassage is an avid cyclist and triathlete, and enjoys fishing and other outdoor activities.
